AMAZING ICE CAVE IN ICELAND

Icelandic Blue Glacier Ice Cave
This breathtaking picture by Örvar Atli was featured by one of my favorite blogs, My Modern Met. Örvar and his friend Skarpi have been busy capturing unique photos of Iceland from a mountaineer’s perspective. Their photos from inside this ice cave are a perfect example. You might also want to check out Skarpi’s photo from the ice cave.
I’ve worked a lot on glaciers and I can tell you that the caves are truly this amazing. The crystal clear blue ice is like nothing else. However, I’m glad to quote Örvar when he says: “Because of a recent accident in Iceland where a young amateur photographer died on a glacier I will not give details of this caves location. If you want to visit this place contact a local mountain guide.” There have been three perfectly avoidable glacier accidents in Iceland this year. Two of these had to do with glacier ice caves such as these and third happened on a glacier. With local knowledge and a mountain guide from fx. Icelandic Mountain Guides or Öræfaferðir, these accidents could have been avoided. The fact is that ice caves regularly collapse and glacier travel requires special skills.
For a few other ice cave photos, check out this ice cave which collapsed, this hypnotizingly blue ice tunnel and this ice cave large enough to park your truck in. Also you might check out Skarpi’s Professional photo page and Örvar’s Arctic Photos.

ice cave
We found this ice cave while searching around this huge glacier, and we were lucky to have a guide who knew how to find it, since it’s very low and hidden from sight. These ice caves are formed by glacial movement and melting, and in summertime they can easily turn into death traps, since they can (and sadly, have) collapse and burry whoever is inside. Since we visited the place during winter, temperatures were low enough for us to venture in safely. LINK
